Soft and Hard Enamel Pin Making Process

After go over the appearance differences between soft enamel pin and hard enamel pin. You may wonder how does those differences from. In this chapter I will show you that it is different making process that creates differences appearance.

Hard enamel plating pin making process(default):

  1. Pin Design
  2. Mold
  3. Rough Pin
  4. Needles on
  5. First time polish
  6. Enamel Colors on
  7. Second time polish
  8. Plating

For hard enamel pin, it starts from a sketch, an idea.

After visualize the idea, there will be a producible design . Import that design into CNC engraving machine, there comes a mold, a mould or a matrix.

Mold turns sheets of metal into rough pins. These rough pins are with a rough surface.

The rough pins will go to first time polish after pin needles be riveted on backside of the pin. First time polish is aim to clean all burrs, smooth outlines of pin to make it ready for plating.

Now its time to put enamel colors on. When the recessed metal parts are full of enamel color, there will be second time polish. The second time polish is aim to flatten pin front surface.

After all above is done, pins are ready for plating. Actually for all items which need plating effect, plating process is always the last step.

For most of hard enamel pins, its making follows above process. But there is always an exception. As I mentioned above that due to special metal color required by client, there will also be dyed hard enamel pin.

Below shows you how the dyed hard enamel pins are made:

Hard enamel dyed pin making process:

  1. Pin Design
  2. Mold
  3. Rough Pin
  4. Needles on
  5. Polish
  6. Dyed
  7. Enamel Paste on
  8. Surface flatten

Most of the processes are just like plated hard enamel pin. The difference comes from step F. After polish, plated hard enamel pins will goes to put enamel colors on while dyed ones are going to dyed process. In next step (step G), the colors will be added on dyed enamel pin. Step H, surface flatten is a very special process. This process is very gentle & soft to avoid damaging of dyed color coat on pin surface. It is similar to polish but with a slight strength.

For most soft enamel pin, the making process is like below

Soft enamel dyed pin making process (default):

  1. Pin design
  2. Mold
  3. Rough pin
  4. Needles on
  5. Polish
  6. Dyed
  7. Soft Enamel Colors on

Same as hard enamel pin. Mold comes from a design then turns metal into rough pins. Put needles on then go to polish process. After dyed process the colors will be filled in recessed part. This is also the default soft enamel pin making process. If without further advice we will take soft enamel pin as dyed soft enamel pin by default.

If requires plating for soft enamel pin, the making process is as below:

Soft enamel plating pin making

  1. Pin design
  2. Mold
  3. Rough pin
  4. Needles on
  5. polish
  6. Soft Enamel Colors on
  7. Plating

Starter is all the same. The only differences between soft enamel dyed pin and soft enamel plating it that: for dyed ones, the metal color be added on before soft enamel colors on . While for plating ones, the metal color be added on after soft enamel colors on.
